Chapter 8

“You’ve had sex,” were the first words Amy said to Jessica when she arrived home on Sunday morning. Preston had just dropped her off, needing to spend the remainder of the day organising and processing the photos he’d taken of last night’s fashion parade. “You have, haven’t you?” Amy went on.

Jessica felt herself blush. “Is it that obvious? How can you tell?”

“Because you’re positively glowing,” her flatmate explained. “All I can say is, it must have been good.”

“It was,” Jessica assured her.

She went to the kitchen and made a cup of coffee, then took it out onto the balcony to drink it. Amy followed her out, a glass of water in her hand.

“So are you two a couple now?” she asked as she leaned against the railing and gazed out towards the ocean.

“I don’t know what we are,” Jessica was honest. “It won’t just be a one-off, I’m pretty sure, but I can’t see how it can really go anywhere, either.”

“Then don’t let it. Try to keep your emotions out of it for the most part. I know that’s hard for you to do, Jess, but just have fun with it, for however long it lasts. Don’t expect it to go anywhere and you can’t get disappointed.”

“That’s pretty logical and sound advice,” Jessica agreed. “But that’s easier said than done. It’s hard not to develop feelings for a man like Preston. The more time I spend with him and the more I sleep with him, it’s inevitable I’ll start to fall for him.” She shrugged and sipped coffee. “I had a great time last night, and I’m sure there are some more fun times to come, but I know at the end of it I’m going to be left with a broken heart. Or at least a big empty hole.”

“Miss Melodramatic. As I keep telling you, just go with the flow. Try and think like a man for a change. Just fuck his brains out and enjoy yourself. Think of him as just a big juicy sex toy with a gorgeous face and body attached.”

Jessica grinned. “I find it very hard to think like a man, Amy; especially since I’m a woman.”

“Just try it. Practice it. Humour me.”

“Okay. I’ll give it a go, but no promises it’ll work.”

“You might be surprised, Jess.”

“I doubt it.” She drank more coffee. “So, is that what you do? I know you’re pretty heavily into the one night stand scene.”

“Thanks. You make me sound like a total slut. But you’re right, I do practice what I preach, and it works for me.”

“But don’t you get lonely?” Jess wondered.

Amy shook her head. “Not really.”

“When was the last time you had a boyfriend? You haven’t had one the entire time you’ve lived with me. How long’s that been now? A year?”

“I broke up with my last boyfriend when I was twenty two.”

“Shit. So you’ve been single for four years.”

“And loving it.”
